Idahoans for Open Primaries Commend Idaho Supreme Court Decision, Remain Unwavering in Pursuit of Fair Elections
Boise, Idaho – Aug. 14, 2024 – Idahoans for Open Primaries extend their gratitude to the Idaho Supreme Court for its decision to dismiss Attorney General Raúl Labrador’s attempt to remove the Open Primaries Initiative from the November ballot.
"This court’s dismissal of Attorney General Labrador’s lawsuit is a major victory for Idaho voters," said Luke Mayville, spokesperson for Idahoans for Open Primaries. "Based on his recent political stunts, it appears the Attorney General is afraid to let Idahoans vote on this issue. The court’s decision guarantees that Idahoans will have a chance to restore the right of all voters—including independents—to vote in every taxpayer-funded election.”
Mayville also commented on the court’s suggestion that the Attorney General may re-file his lawsuit in a lower court.
“This lawsuit is dead in the water. Even if the AG decides to try again in a lower court, he won’t have enough time before Election Day. Today’s decision guarantees that the people of Idaho will have a chance to decide at the ballot box in November.”
Idahoans for Open Primaries reaffirms their confidence in the legality and integrity of the initiative, which will be Proposition 1 on the November ballot.
"We thank the Idaho Supreme Court for upholding a fair legal process," Mayville continued. "The people of Idaho agree that in a taxpayer-funded election we shouldn’t have to pick a party to participate. Proposition 1 will give every voter the freedom to participate in all elections."
Idahoans for Open Primaries remain steadfast and undaunted in their pursuit of a more accountable and transparent election system.
"This began as a grassroots effort from the citizens of Idaho,” Mayville said. “It was driven by more than 2,000 dedicated volunteers and emboldened by more than 97,000 voters who signed the petition to get the Open Primaries Initiative on the ballot. The task between now and November is to make sure every Idaho voter knows about Prop 1 and their chance to open Idaho’s primary elections to all voters.”
